Trip y travel
Trip y travel son dos palabras que los alumnos suelen confundir muchísimo. En este post os explico el uso de estas palabras junto con journey, otra que también genera problemas.
The table below will help clarify the meaning and use of vocabulary related to travel.
Travel | The word ‘travel’ is used to talk about going from one place to another. It can be a verb, a noun or an adjective. ♦ verb : Tom travels a lot in his job. ♦ noun (uncountable): Travel nowadays is faster and less expensive than before. ♦ adjective : There is a travel agency beside the bank.(travel agency, travel agent, air travel, travel documents, travel insurance, travel expenses) |
Trip | The word ‘trip‘ is used to talk about a short journey somewhere for a purpose, business or pleasure. ♦ For our wedding anniversary, we went on a trip to Venice. ♦ My boss is often away on business trips. ♦ During our holiday, we took a boat trip to the islands.(to go on a (business / day / round) trip) |
Journey | A journey is the distance covered in travelling from one place to another. ‘Journey’ can refer to a long distance or a short regular one. ♦ The journey was long and tiring; it took us 5 hours to get there. ♦ Did you have a good journey? Yes, it was quite pleasant. ♦ How long is your journey to work? Just about 20 minutes.(to make a journey: He makes the journey to Rome three times a year) |

Common mistake: I did a travel
Remember, we can’t say in English do a trip or do a travel, we say «go on a trip»: I went on a trip (me fui de viaje).
Other similar phrases: «go on an excursion», «go on a cruise», «go on a tour»
But we can say «make a journey».

Hola, Eva:
qué alegría, que me sigas ya tantos años y que hayas ido pasando todos los niveles hasta llegar a avanzado. ¿Qué estás en la EOI? Con respecto a lo que me preguntas de una recomendación para leer, aquí te pongo tres:
– Before I go to sleep
– The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time
– The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas
– Animal Farm
Todos éstos son originales, pero a pesar de serlo, no son demasiado complicados. Animal Farm está también graduado, de éstos que hacen para estudiantes de inglés más facilitos. Lo que no sé ya es si están en Kindle.
Un saludo y gracias por seguirnos,
Patricia
