Essay: survival experience

Hace unos días una seguidora de la Web del Inglés, Nuria, se ponía en contacto conmigo para que le corrigiera unos writings de preparación de CAE. Yo le corregí todos los writings y su principal problema era que el nivel gramatical y semántico (vocabulario) de su writing era demasiado básico para el CAE. Se lo expliqué y le dije que, de cara al examen, había que subir el nivel del writing tanto en gramátical como en vocabulario. Nuria lo entendió perfectamente y me mandó unos cuantos writings más, esta vez, haciendo uso de gramática y vocabulario avanzado. Como lo hizo tan bien y me gustaron tantos, he decidido publicar hoy uno para compartir con todos vosotros. Se trata de un essay para tratar la survival experience (experiencia de supervivencia) de unos alumnos durante un periodo de tres días. Los alumnos viven en un lugar remotoy son ellos los que tienen que organizarse un refugio donde dormir, comida y cobijo. Hay que tratar los siguientes puntos: self-sufficiency, insight into different living conditions and teamwork.

Y éste es su writing:

   It goes without saying that the students who have the chance to attend this excursion will consider it as a once-in-a-lifetime experience. But what skills will be required to survive in this complicated situation?

To begin with, undoubtedly, autonomy is totally necessary to be capable of living in a place away from the city, since students must be prepared to survive without any help, except from for their own abilities. Nevertheless, some experts argue that after having lived through such a hard time, children or teenagers could suffer from mental illnesses owing to the lack of adult’s support.

Furthermore, not only are they expected to be self-sufficient, but they should also learn how to work in teams. Cooperation is said to be the best support you can have when you are experiencing a difficult situation, as the group * provides you with some ideas that you have not probably come up with. Contrary to popular belief, working in teams allows you to develop some hidden skills, such as sympathy, because the more you help others, the more the coexistence you will be able to experience.

Of the two arguments outlined above, as far as I am concerned, the most effective ability to survive is working in groups. Rarely will not a problem not be solved if you cope with it in a collaborative way, due to the several opinions and solutions provided by the different members. As well Also, human beings are used to living in groups; therefore, surviving in an isolated place without any companionship could result in a terrible experience.

NOTAS:

1. Me gusta mucho este writing. Está muy completo y puedes demostrarle al examinador que sabes gramática avanzada, así es como hay que hacerlo, well done!
2. Aspectos a mejorar:

• Live + through = se utiliza para “vivir tiempos difíciles”, “vivir una guerra”, “vivir una crisis”, etc.
• The group provides you with… = está bien así, pero creo que estás especulando e imaginando cómo sería la convivencia allí, por tanto, yo utilizaría un modal de especulation (may, might, could): the group may provide you with…
• Cuando haces una inversión, si quieres poner la negativa, ponla después del sujeto.
• As well se utiliza para “también” pero a final de oración: I cleaned the house as well.
• Without + any + uncountable noun = without any time por ejemplo. En tu oración, “companionship” es uncountable también.

3. Cosas positivas:

• Adverbios para enfatizar: undoubtedly
• Passive: must be prepared, should be solved
• Passive con reporting verbs: is said to
• After + ing: after having lived
• Without + any + uncountable noun: without any help
• The more… the more
• Verb in ing = en función de sujeto
• Preposición + verb in in: capable of living
• Be used to + verb in ing
• Such + a + adjective + noun: such a hard time
• Inversiones con negative adverbials: not only… but also, rarely.
• Vocabulario avanzado: consider it as a once-in-a-lifetime experience, suffer from, the lack of, come up with ideas, cope with, result in.
